Stone changes everything about a house

There is a reason stone has been the premium exterior for centuries. It grounds a house visually — a stone foundation or entry makes the whole structure feel solid and permanent in a way siding never does. A stone fireplace becomes the room. A stone accent wall turns a plain facade into architecture. And unlike trends that age out, stone just looks right, decade after decade.

Stone veneer gives you that look without the cost and structural demands of full-depth stone. Thin-cut natural stone or manufactured stone is applied as a facing over a prepared wall. From the street, it reads as stone — because the face you see is stone. The difference is what is behind it, and your wallet.

Natural vs. manufactured stone veneer

Natural thin veneer is real stone, sawn or split thin — usually about an inch thick. Each piece is unique: the color variation, the texture, the way light hits it. It weathers like real stone because it is real stone, and it ages beautifully. It costs more than manufactured, and the palette is limited to what the quarry produces — but nothing else looks quite like it.

Manufactured stone veneer is cast from molds taken from real stone, using cement, aggregates, and pigments. The best products are remarkably convincing, and they offer something natural stone cannot: total consistency and a huge range of styles and colors. It is lighter, easier to install, and costs less. The trade-off is that it is a manufactured product — quality varies by brand, and cheap product looks cheap.

We install both, and we will give you our honest read for your project. For a front elevation that defines the house, many clients choose natural. For a fireplace surround or a garden wall, manufactured often makes more sense. There is no universally right answer — there is the right answer for your house and your budget.

Where stone veneer works best

Home exteriors are the classic application: a stone water table along the foundation, a full stone front, or stone on the entry and garage bump-outs with siding elsewhere. This mixed approach — stone where it counts, siding where it does not — is the smart money. You get the stone look at the focal points without paying to wrap the whole house.

Fireplaces are the second home run. A floor-to-ceiling stone fireplace surround transforms a living room more than any other single change. We do interior fireplace veneer with proper clearances and heat-rated materials — stone around a firebox has to handle heat cycles, and we build for that.

Accent walls, both inside and out, are the third. A stone wall behind a bar, in an entry, or on a patio takes a flat space and gives it depth and texture. Outdoors, veneer dresses up foundation walls, porch piers, outdoor kitchens, and mailbox columns. Anywhere you want the eye to land, stone earns its keep.

How we install it right

Stone veneer fails when the prep is skipped. The wall behind the stone has to be right: proper water-resistive barrier, metal lath fastened correctly, and a scratch coat that gives the stone something to grip. Every shortcut here — missing barrier, loose lath, thin scratch coat — becomes a failure in a few years. Stones pop off, water gets behind, and the "stone" wall becomes a repair bill.

We do the full system. Barrier, lath, scratch coat, then each stone set in mortar with full coverage on the back — no spot-bonding, no hollow spots. Joints are struck and tooled for the look you chose: tight dry-stack joints for a modern feel, wider raked joints for rustic. We blend stone from multiple boxes or pallets as we go so color stays even across the wall — nothing screams amateur like a wall that changes shade halfway across.

Drainage and flashing details get the same care. Stone at grade needs separation from soil. Sills and caps need slope to shed water. Weep details at the base let any water that gets behind the veneer escape instead of sitting against your house. These are the details you never see in the finished job — and the reason it lasts.

What it does for your home

Let us be straight: we do not promise a dollar of added value. What we can tell you is what we see — stone-front homes photograph better, show better, and draw more attention than identical homes without it. Appraisers and buyers consistently treat masonry exteriors as a premium feature. A stone entry or fireplace is the kind of upgrade people remember when they tour a house.

Beyond resale, there is the daily effect. You see your home's exterior every day. Stone makes it feel finished, substantial, permanent. Clients tell us the house finally looks like the one they pictured. That is worth something too.

Our process

Step one: we visit and look at the wall or fireplace you want to transform — checking the substrate, measurements, and any structural or clearance issues. Step two: you choose your stone from samples we bring — natural or manufactured, color, and joint style. Step three: you get a written estimate, free, with the stone spec, the prep scope, and the price. Step four: we prep, install, and finish — protecting your home and landscaping throughout. Step five: we walk the finished work with you in daylight, because stone has to be judged in real light.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between natural and manufactured stone veneer?

Natural veneer is real stone cut thin — unique, ages beautifully, costs more. Manufactured veneer is cast from real-stone molds — consistent, more style options, lighter, less expensive. We install both and will help you choose based on your project and budget.

Can stone veneer go over my existing siding or brick?

It depends on what is there and its condition. Veneer needs a solid, properly prepared substrate with the right water barrier and lath system. We inspect your existing wall during the estimate and tell you honestly whether it can take veneer directly or needs prep work first.

Is stone veneer as durable as real full-depth stone?

The face you see and touch is just as durable — natural veneer is real stone, and quality manufactured veneer is very tough. The difference is structural: veneer is a facing, not a load-bearing wall. Installed with the proper system, it lasts decades.

Can you do a stone fireplace inside my home?

Yes — interior fireplace surrounds are one of our favorite projects. We use heat-rated materials with proper clearances around the firebox, and we protect your floors and furnishings during installation.

How do you make sure the stone does not fall off?

By doing the full system: water-resistive barrier, properly fastened metal lath, a real scratch coat, and each stone set with full mortar coverage — never spot-bonded. Most veneer failures trace back to skipped prep, which is why we never skip it.

How long does a stone veneer project take?

A fireplace surround is often a few days. An accent wall runs about a week. A full home exterior is two to four weeks depending on size. Your estimate includes a realistic schedule for your specific project.
